About Jerusalem Ballet
The Jerusalem Ballet company and the Jerusalem Ballet School operate together within the framework of the Jerusalem Ballet Association, managed by Nadya Timofeeva, the Artistic Director, and Julia Shachal, the CEO. The association, which initially included only the school, was founded in 2004 by Bolshoi Ballet dancer Nina Timofeyeva. The Jerusalem Ballet company was established in 2008 by Nadya Timofeeva, and Marina Neeman, who served as the CEO at the time. In its performances both in Israel and abroad, the company presents works on Israeli, Jewish, and international themes, blending the traditions of classical ballet with neoclassical, modern, and contemporary styles.
Nina Timofeyeva – Founder of The Jerusalem Ballet
Nina Timofeyeva (Leningrad 1935 – Jerusalem 2014) began her ballet career as a student at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, and later as a dancer with the Kirov Ballet. From 1956 until her retirement from the stage in 1988, she served as a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. During those years, she earned great acclaim for her leading roles in the company’s repertoire, including new works by the great Soviet-era choreographers Mikhail Lavrovsky, Leonid Yakobson, Kasyan Goleizovsky, and Yury Grigorovich.
After her retirement, decorated with honors and a graduate of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Nina continued to work at the Bolshoi Theatre as a teacher until immigrating to Israel in 1991. In Israel, she taught at the Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem until 2003, when she retired and opened her own studio. In 2007, Nina passed on the management of the school and company to her daughter, Nadya, who is also a dancer, a graduate of the Bolshoi Ballet School, and former soloist with the Kremlin Ballet in Moscow.
